The teaser of Reham Khan’s much-hyped co-production Janaan is out and it serves the purpose by not really revealing much of the story while still creating excitement. That said, the modern love story does seem to play on a number of clichés. For starters, a love triangle between two men and a woman.
Set against the backdrop of the picturesque Northern Pakistan, the purpose of Janaan, from the get-go, was to defy stereotypes associated with Pakhtun households and portray the region, otherwise known to be conservative and extreme in its traditions, in a soft, modern light. And while it ticks all the boxes in terms of depicting a contemporary, modern-day family, it doesn’t seem to be anything more than a love triangle between Armeena Rana Khan, who is said to have returned from England in the film, a more expressive Ali Rehman and the introvert Bilal Ashraf. Yes, it does remind you of a number of Bollywood films from Saagar to Yeh Dillagi to Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam where one guy keeps his feelings bottled up while the other one is quick to make the move.
It’s still too early to give a verdict. It really depends how interestingly the love triangle is sewn into the plot as we do see bursts of emotions, intensity and high-octane drama. The film, which marks the debut of Hareem Farooq as a producer and is written by Osman Khalid Butt, is scheduled to release on September 13. Only time will tell if there is more to the story than what can be seen at face value.
