Virginia's County sues to halt Trump's 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington County sued the federal government to block Trump's 250-foot triumphal arch, citing environmental and public safety violations
Local authorities in Arlington, Virginia, sued the US Department of Interior and National Park Service, seeking to block President Donald Trump's proposed triumphal arch.
The 250-foot (76-meter) arch project modeled on Paris' Arc de Triomphe and sited near Arlington National Cemetery, just across the Potomac River from Washington, could win approval as early as next month.
As reported, the Arlington County Board in Virginia filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to halt construction of the proposed Triumphal Arch, making it the first governmental body to take legal action against the project.
The complaint alleges that the National Park Service bypassed mandatory reviews and failed to take a "hard look" at the project's environmental impacts under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Public Safety & Infrastructure Concerns:
Arlington officials argue that the arch will harm public safety by clogging critical local thoroughfares used for emergency transport services, increase noise and air pollution, and force flight diversions into and out of nearby Reagan National Airport.
Originally introduced by President Trump as a monument to honor the 250th anniversary of American independence, the plans later drew additional scrutiny when he announced intentions to convert the structure into a fortified military complex capable of housing drones, storing ammunition, and positioning snipers.
Arlington's lawsuit joins separate legal challenges brought forward by veterans and architectural historians, who have argued that the monument would also disrupt historic sightlines between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
