Google launches 5 Googlebook laptops starting at $899

Google is done treating laptops as an afterthought to Android and ChromeOS. Google Book, the company's new premium laptop category, is landing October 4 in the US with five launch devices, a redesigned Material 3 Expressive interface, and Gemini built into the operating system itself rather than bolted on as an app.

Googlebook's desktop closely mirrors the Pixel phone experience, with Quick Settings and notifications in the top-right corner, time and date on the left, and a centre-aligned dock anchored by the familiar "G" app drawer icon.

Signing into a Googlebook pulls in an Android phone's settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages automatically, with Android 17's "Continue On" feature and Cast My Apps handling cross-device continuity for anyone who doesn't want to install an Android app locally.

Gemini Intelligence runs through a magic pointer and a wiggle gesture that summons the assistant for tasks like adding dates directly to a calendar.

Google built a native Antigravity app for Google Books with full Linux environment access, and developers can also install Claude Code or OpenAI's Codex directly.

A Level 5 security-certified hypervisor using pKVM isolation keeps that Linux environment sandboxed while still allowing full terminal access.
