Buckingham Palace challenges Earl Spencer's claim about 'we'll forget Diana'

Buckingham Palace did not ignore a shocking claim made in a bombshell book by Earl Charles Spencer.

He is the brother of the late Princess Diana, and his book Swan Song: My Sister is due to be released next week.

However, the Daily Mail published an excerpt from the book.

In it, Spencer recalls his row with then-Prince Charles shortly after Diana's death

It was whether it was suitable for the young Prince William and Prince Henry to walk behind his mother's coffin during the funeral ceremony.

Spencer objected to having them walk behind Diana's coffin, suggesting their mother wanted the same thing.

However, Charles furiously pushed back and allegedly shot back, “Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough.”

According to Spencer, this is evidence that the now-king reportedly had contempt for his ex-wife.

Now, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson has responded to the claim.

This is extraordinary, however, given the perception that the palace rarely weighs in on claims made in books.

"While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss."

The response questioned Spencer's characterization of his conversation with Charles about Princess Diana's death.
