Dario Amodei reveals who he would trust with control over AI

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has reportedly said that he would be open to regulation by the right coalition of democratically elected governments emphasizing the need for accountable governance during an interview about his new essay titled: “ We must Pace the Frontier.”

The 43-year-old said: “I think for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks.”

“The worry I have – I am concerned that one single government could abuse this technology just as easily as a single company could. But I think a combination of democratically-elected governments,"

"I don't know about 'handing over,' but some kind of oversight, some kind of joint governance.”

On asking Jacob Coxon’s warnings about a Skynet scenario where an AI becomes advanced enough for human extinction, Amodei said: “ I don't think I fully just appreciated what it would actually be like when the progress was as fast as it was, it does not we need to panic today, and it does not mean we need to shut it all down. But I would say it is a warming sign that we need to slow down.”

According to Amodei, an AI kill switch could be a viable option but he does not prefer completely banning the technology. The idea that humanity would never truly experience its incredible benefits does not sit right with him.

Nonetheless, sustained collaboration aimed at putting a speed limit on the rate of AI progress remains very difficult because the incentives to pull ahead and the military advantage gained are so large that it is uncertain if such coordination is even possible.
