'Happy Days' star Henry Winkler reveals what pushed him to seek therapy at 70

Henry Winkler began his therapy at 70 and the actor admitted it all started when his rational side of mind stopped working.

During a recent sit-down on In Depth With Graham Bensinger, Henry, now 80, revealed that after years of moving on from things without resolving it, he reached at a point where he could not hold it anymore and needed to "empty" himself "out of all of the rancid garbage."

The Happy Days alum told Graham Bensinger, “About 10 years ago, maybe 12 years ago, I was pretty good at either figuring things out or making it or smoothing things out in my mind or rationalizing.”

But, Henry confessed, “And I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

The host then recalled Henry's wife's remarks that at his lowest point, he was not letting anyone in, to which he agreed, “I didn’t let anybody in.”

And when almost everything derailed, he had to start his therapy, Henry explained.

“I was not being able to just [say], ‘Oh, well, OK, I’ll move that aside and I’ll just move forward," he shared.

“I needed to now empty myself out of all of the rancid garbage I had allowed to infiltrate.”

Now, after taking therapy for almost a decade, Henry admitted his ability to “just listen” has increased, and now he does not have to throw his "point of view in unless it’s asked for."

He further added about his past condition, “I was Swiss cheese. I was filled with holes. And I had to constantly be anxious about stepping in one of those holes. And my job is to become a chunk of cheddar, not a hole in sight.”
