'The X Factor' could return with fresh judging panel
ITV in talks to bring back 'The X Factor' after seven years
The X Factor may be making a comeback, according to new reports, nearly seven years after the singing competition was taken off the air.
Sources say ITV is reportedly in discussions with the show's original production company about reviving the series in hopes of boosting viewership.
At its peak, the show attracted nearly 20 million viewers and launched the careers of major music artists.
Reports suggest that Simon Cowell, the show's original head judge, could return in some capacity, though details remain unclear.
Insiders say the network is interested in bringing back the format with a fresh, modern approach, potentially opting for a younger judging panel who may be appealing to today's audiences.
Sources also say ITV is looking to fill a gap in its entertainment lineup after the disappointing performance of some newer shows.
"ITV have a giant gaping hole that needs filling in its entertainment schedule, particularly over weekends when bigger viewing figures are up for grabs," a source told The Sun.
"ITV can’t afford another disaster after the car crash of The Neighbourhood, which was colossally expensive and failed terribly. Rather than creating more flop formats they have the opportunity to give The X Factor, a sure-fire hit, a modern makeover."
The insider explained that reviving a proven hit like The X Factor could be a safer bet than continuing to develop new, untested formats.
"They can explore a younger, fresher panel, with new faces and have Cowell behind the scenes. The plan is for the show’s return to take on a new life and be updated to envelop social media generation."
Earlier this year, it was also reported that Cowell had signed on for a separate documentary project exploring the show's cultural impact and behind-the-scenes history.
