Matthew McConaughey reveals rom-com that still pays the best
Matthew McConaughey opens up about his favourite romantic comedy
Matthew McConaughey is sharing which of his romantic comedies remains his favourite and also pays the best.
The 56-year-old actor appeared in several rom-coms during the 2000s, but he says his 2003 film How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days holds a special place for him, both personally and financially.
He made the remarks on a recent episode of Happy Sad Confused podcast, calling the movie "the gift that keeps on giving" and said it remains his top-earning film in residual payments.
“And it still pays the best mailbox money of any film I’ve ever done. By far. By lengths.”
He explained that he used to receive noticeable payments each year around Valentine's Day, back when DVD and cable royalties were common.
“But, I mean, look: the movie for me, for that genre, let me just own that genre. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days … that’s a real anchor in the rom-com genre through time."
Back in 2024, his co-star from the film, Kate Hudson, shared that she'd be open to doing a sequel if the right script came together, though nothing has moved forward yet.
McConaughey has also opened up in the past about eventually stepping away from romantic comedies.
He shared on the Good Trouble podcast that he had become known mainly for that genre, and that it became difficult for him to be considered for more dramatic roles.
"I was the rom-com dude, man, that was my lane, and I liked that lane. That lane paid well and it was working.
"But the lane was … I was so strong in that lane that anything outside of that lane, dramas and stuff that I wanted to do, were like, 'no, no, no, no, no McConaughey.' Hollywood said, 'no, no, no, no, you should stay there, stay there.'"
He explained that he eventually chose to leave Hollywood and move to a ranch in Texas, where he decided he'd only return to acting for roles he truly wanted to take on.
