David Crowley pulls off upset win in Wisconsin Democratic primary for governor

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has narrowly won Wisconsin’s Democratic primary for governor, defeating progressive candidate Francesca Hong in a closely fought contest.

With most ballots counted, Crowley had 39.8 percent of the vote compared with Hong’s 39.4 percent, giving him a lead of just over 3,000 votes, according to the Associated Press.

The result marks an upset after polls had placed Hong, a chef, former restaurant owner and democratic socialist, ahead during much of the campaign.

Crowley had previously left the race before returning with the endorsement of outgoing Democratic Governor Tony Evers.

He campaigned heavily on electability and his executive experience.

“I look forward to earning their support,” Crowley told reporters of Hong’s voters following Tuesday’s primary.

Crowley also rejected suggestions that the contest represented a battle between the Democratic Party’s progressive and centrist wings.

“We may not agree on every policy. We may not use the same labels, but we all want safe communities, strong schools, affordable healthcare, good-paying jobs, and a brighter future for all of our children,” he said.

Crowley will now face Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, an outspoken supporter of President Donald Trump, in November’s general election.
