German unemployement exceeds expectations, signalling weak autumn momentum

According to figures released by the Federal Labour Office, the unemployment in Germany rose significantly more than expected in September.

Pointing to persistent structural weakness across Europe's largest economy, Federal Labour Office data showed that seasonally adjusted jobless figures climbed by 12,000 to hit 3.01 million, far surpassing analyst expectations and highlighting a sluggish post-summer labor market pickup.

In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of jobless individuals increased by 12,000 to reach 3.01 million.

The reading vastly exceeded consensus forecasts from analysts polled by Reuters, who had anticipated a modest uptick of just 1,000.

Despite the worse-than-expected rise in raw numbers, the seasonally adjusted jobless rate remained stable at 6.4%.

The overall unadjusted number of unemployed people dipped slightly under the 3 million mark in September after sitting above that figure for two months in a row.

The data underscores ongoing macroeconomic headwinds facing Germany, where persistent structural challenges and sluggish industrial demand continue to weigh heavily on employment.

Economists warn that while cyclical downturns may be bottoming out, structural hurdles will likely keep the country’s labor market subdued through the final quarters of the year.

On an unadjusted basis, the total count of unemployed people dipped marginally below the 3 million thresholds after lingering above it for the prior two consecutive months.

The autumn pickup in Germany's labour market typically begins in September, but this year's start has been sluggish, said labour office head Andrea Nahles in a statement.

"The economic improvement is not yet reaching the labour market," He added.

Nahles emphasized that broader economic improvements have yet to trickle down into meaningful labor market recovery.
