Google cancelled an app that hadn't launched yet, one day before it was due, after nearly a million people signed up.

The company confirmed on July 31 that it's scrapping the standalone AI Studio mobile app for Android and iOS, first teased at Google I/O 2026.

The app was pitched as a way to capture an idea on the go and have a working prototype ready by the time you reached your desk, essentially a pocket-sized alternative to the AI Studio website. It was expected to launch on August 1.

Around 800,000 users across more than 168 countries had pre-ordered the app on the Play Store and App Store, a figure Google itself cited as proof of demand for building software on the move.

That's precisely why the decision to cancel stands out: the company isn't walking away because interest was thin but because it decided the delivery method was wrong.

Google is not planning to release the download as a separate offering, but rather, app development tools will emerge organically during conversations with Gemini.

Google is collaborating directly with the developers of the Gemini app for this purpose, although there has been no announcement about any timeline for the project. All those who have pre-ordered the app will receive it as part of the Gemini application when it is ready.

The AI Studio website, however, is not going away anytime soon and will continue to improve as the place where developers can take their prototypes through production.

A mobile-first stance, on the other hand, is more about the overarching idea within Google of combining all the AI capabilities within Gemini and not distributing them throughout different applications.
