King Charles spotlights sport's power to unite at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
King Charles's message comes ahead of the closing ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
As the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games come to an end, King Charles has issued a message of unity, sharing how the sport forges closer ties between countries and generations across the Commonwealth.
"The Games have served as a stage for outstanding athletic excellence, a joyful celebration of all that unites our Commonwealth nations and a powerful reminder of sport’s ability to bring nations and generations closer together," the statement shares.
Charles further states the participants should reflect on these Games and take pride in their achievements.
"I send my heartfelt congratulations to all those competitors who were victorious, while hoping that each and every one of you who participated or contributed will look back on these Games with immense pride in what you have accomplished," he shares.
Scottish athletes, meanwhile, succeeded much in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Melanie Woods, a Scottish wheelchair racer who won gold for 400 meters, tells STV News, “That was the best one yet."
"I think I was really able to absorb the crowd and appreciate that lap of honour and everyone that’s here to support me."
Another Scottish athlete, Josh Kerr, who won in the men's mile, says, “This is a home championship for us; we have to own that space, we have to own our ground."
"I learnt how to race on that track, and so to really enjoy that last 100 was really important," he concludes.
