Charles Spencer reveals what King Charles told him after Diana's death

King Charles' alleged reaction to Princess Diana's death has been revealed by the late Princess' brother, Charles Spencer.

In an excerpt from Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, published by the Daily Mail, Spencer recalled receiving a phone call from the future King shortly after the death of Lady Diana.

Spencer, who was at his home in Cape Town, South Africa, said the phone was ringing constantly as news of Diana’s death spread.

He revealed, "The phone rang constantly. Prince Charles caught me as I crossed the landing upstairs."

"Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated — like a lottery winner, I remember thinking at the time," the brother of Diana added.

Furthermore, Spencer shared that Charles informed him that he had told Prince William and Prince Harry of their mother's death. "He let me know he had informed William and Harry of their mother’s death, first thing that morning, in their bedrooms at Balmoral. It all sounded strangely matter-of-fact, given the enormity of the disaster."

Looking back after all these years, Spencer wrote, "I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not."

"It can be hard to feel too much sympathy for an ex-spouse, or those who care for them profoundly, after bitter divorce," he added.

In the book, Charles Spencer has also shared tense conversation with then-Prince Charles surrounding Princess Diana's funeral. As per Spencer, the future King became angry during the call and told him "we’ll forget her soon enough!"

"I was so stunned that it took me a few seconds to reply. ‘I can’t believe you just said that,’ I said flatly, before hanging up," Spencer wrote.

Princess Diana passed away following a tragic car accident in Paris in August 1997.
