Buckingham Palace on Monday confirmed that the expected meeting between Andy Burnham and King Charles has taken place.

This was the last formal step towards Burnham taking over from Keir Starmer as prime minister.

"His Majesty received in audience the Rt. Hon. Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt. Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King's offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister," the palace said in a statement.

The abbreviation “Rt. Hon.” stands for “Right Honourable,” a form of address used for members of the Privy Council, a group of senior figures from the government including the prime minister.

The palace also released a photo the king’s meeting with Andy Burnham, prompting instant reaction from prominent British journalist Piers Morgan.

Morgan, who is known as an admirer of the king and his family, seemed to be unhappy with the development.

Sharing King Charles and Burnham’s photo on social media, Morgan wrote, “The Coronation: Unelected man appointed British Prime Minister by unelected man. “
