Iran attacks US bases in the Gulf after second night of American strikes

The United States has carried out a fresh wave of military strikes on Iran, with Tehran responding hours later by launching drones and missiles at US military bases across the Gulf, according to CNN.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation targeted dozens of Iranian military sites after President Donald Trump authorised the strikes. CENTCOM said the attacks were intended "to continue degrading their ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial ships freely transiting the Strait of Hormuz."

Iranian state news agency IRNA said a security guard was killed and four others were injured after a projectile struck a water pumping station in Mahshahr County.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) later announced it had launched drones and missiles at US military bases in response to the strikes.

CNN reported that warning sirens sounded in Bahrain, while Kuwait's military said it was responding to aerial threats.

Jordan's armed forces also intercepted four missiles that entered its airspace, according to the country's state media.

The renewed fighting also affected global energy markets as Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 3.92 percent to $78.99 a barrel, while US crude increased 3.44 percent to $73.87.
