Strait of Hormuz breakthrough: Oman announces temporary shipping transit corridor

Oman has announced the opening of a temporary transit corridor for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz in collaboration with the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The recent development is aimed at restoring stable and toll-free navigation through one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints responsible for shipping 40 percent of global oil and other critical goods.

In a post on X, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre announced the establishment of shipping transit in line with Oman’s commitment to international law.

"Based on the Sultanate of Oman's responsibility toward the Strait of Hormuz and its importance to the global economy, and in accordance with its firm commitment to international law and the law of the sea….Oman has worked in coordination with the International Maritime Organization to provide the option of using a temporary maritime corridor for all vessels," the report said.

Vessels intending to use the corridor must coordinate directly with the IMO and follow specific transit coordinates provided by the maritime and Omani authorities.

On Tuesday, Iran and Oman also established a joint working group. The purpose of the group would be to negotiate the future management of navigation in Hormuz Strait. By collaborating with other Gulf states, the group would also determine maritime services to vessels along with related costs.

The recent move aligns with a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed by US and Iran to stop conflict on all fronts including Lebanon.

Under clause 5 of MoU, Iran will hold talks with Oman on the future administration of Hormuz while making efforts to ensure “the safe and toll-free passage of commercial vessels between Gulf and Gulf of Oman for 60 days.”

The corridor represents a significant step toward stabilizing shipping after months of volatility and US naval blockades.
