Who is Ben Gannon-Doak, Scotland’s new FIFA World Cup hero?

Ben Gannon-Doak emerged as Scotland’s standout performer as they returned to the men’s World Cup for the first time in 28 years with a hard-fought win over Haiti.

The 20-year-old winger produced a brilliant performance in Boston, winning over the Tartan Army with his fearless attacking play and relentless energy.

While experienced names such as Scott McTominay, John McGinn and Lawrence Shankland started for Steve Clarke’s side, it was Gannon-Doak who stole the spotlight.

Gannon-Doak’s rise has not been straightforward as injuries forced him to miss Euro 2024 after initially being included in Clarke’s squad two years ago.

“The Euros probably came a bit too early, but I don't think I would have played if I was there,” he recently told Sky Sports.

The youngster also spoke earlier this year about rediscovering his Christian faith during difficult periods away from football.

“I just felt God calling me,” Gannon-Doak said in a BBC Scotland documentary.

The winger played a major role in Scotland’s attacking threat against Haiti before being substituted late on to huge applause from supporters inside Boston Stadium.

Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin praised the athlete on BBC Sportsound, saying: “He had a cracker tonight.”
