The author of new book The Kennedys and the Windsors, Caroline Hallemann revealed to People Magazine that the wife of President John F. Kennedy was "very excited to go to Buckingham Palace and thrilled to meet the Queen."

"But she was just slightly disappointed that the palace wasn't grander," Caroline added of the first lady.

In fact, Queen Elizabeth also reportedly failed to make much of an impression on Jackie as the royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith shared that the wife of John summed up Her Majesty's hairstyle in two words: "too flat."

However, Jackie and Queen developed mutual respect later. Following a trip to India and Pakistan a year later, Jackie returned to Buckingham Palace and "had a great lunch."

The two ladies talked about horses as that was something where they were "able to really connect," Caroline said. "That was a true passion for both of these women."

The author further shared, "Many people have said when they were with horses, when they were riding — that was when they felt the most themselves."

Adding, "That second conversation at Buckingham Palace would have been when they really connected on that topic and found common ground."

Notably, Jackie also described her struggles in the spotlight 24 hours, the Queen "looked rather conspiratorial" and she told the first lady: "One gets crafty after a while and learns how to save oneself."

Speaking more about Jackie Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth, the author Caroline Hallemann said, "They were two women with young children in the public eye who had great proximity to power and soft diplomacy, but not true political power behind."

Adding, "We think about Jackie in that moment in the 1960s, when she was so glamorous and stylish. She had such an appreciation for the arts and she spoke multiple languages and was so worldly and seen as a real asset to the Kennedy administration."

"It was interesting because at that moment [of the 1961 dinner], Jackie had not been first lady for very long, whereas the Queen had already been serving in her role for quite a long time, and she knew her role was lifelong," Caroline noted.
