Heartbroken families force crackdown on dogs running wild in graveyards

In the city of Bath, Somerset, multiple reports emerged of unruly dogs running loose and fouling graves.

Now, in response, a local council sprang into action.

A legal order by Bath & North East Somerset Council is under consideration, according to Bath Echo.

It states that when dog owners visit cemetery grounds with their pets, they must be on leads no longer than two meters.

In addition, if the pets leave their waste on the cemetery, the owners must clean it or face a fine.

Moreover, the council officials held a public consultation with the pet owners and found a majority support for stricter rules.

Councilor Rigby said, “It is unfortunate we must consider a legal order as a last resort to address these issues.

“Our cemeteries are places people should be able to visit in peace and dignity."

“As a dog lover myself, I understand they can be part of the family, but I regret that access to a place of remembrance for some has turned into a place for unfettered and intrusive behavior.

“This order is not about banning dogs entirely. It is about ensuring they are kept under control and that these sensitive spaces remain safe and respectful for everyone.

“Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation—I will consider all views carefully before making my decision.”

The move comes in the wake of grieving families complaining of dogs roaming freely on graves.
