Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s Sicily wedding sparks backlash
Dua Lipa and Callum Turner wedding faces protests in Palermo
Dua Lipa and Callum Turner are facing backlash from residents in Palermo ahead of their luxury wedding celebrations this weekend.
The couple reportedly legally married in London last week and are now preparing for a bigger ceremony in Sicily. The wedding is expected to attract several famous guests, including Elton John, Charli XCX and Donatella Versace. However, some locals are unhappy about the disruption caused by the event.
Reports say two public squares in Palermo have been closed for the wedding, while roads nearby have also been blocked off. Residents in the area were reportedly asked to sign non-disclosure agreements, and drone flights have been banned during the celebrations.
Angry residents have responded by putting up protest posters across the city. Some signs read, “Palermo is not for rent” and “Our square is not your living room.”
Another message stated, “Public spaces belong to everyone.”
Reports claim wedding organisers removed some of the posters, but protesters later painted graffiti with similar slogans around the city.
An anti-tourism group also encouraged locals online to display protest signs from their balconies during the wedding weekend.
Local officials have reportedly described the event as a “demonstration production” rather than directly confirming it is connected to the celebrity wedding.
A source told The Sun that security around the event is extremely strict and that local police are helping manage the arrangements.
"It's all very, very off limits. It's top secret. The security is private but the local police are involved with the organisation of the event," the insider told the magazine. "The squares they are going to close off are already pedestrian zones with no traffic."
The person continued, "Officials have made up this 'demonstration production in the square' in Piazza Sant'Anna and Piazza dei Vaspri as an excuse to put up barriers and keep pedestrians out."
Despite the controversy, preparations for the star-studded celebration are still expected to continue across Palermo this weekend.
