Massive fire breaks out at Brampton scrap metal yard near Pearson Airport
Images from the scene showed heavy flames spreading through large piles of scrap metal while dark smoke rose high into the sky
Emergency crews are battling a major fire at a scrap metal yard in Brampton, Ontario, with thick black smoke visible across parts of the Greater Toronto Area.
Peel police said firefighters were called to the property near Intermodal and Goreway drives at around 4:22 PM local time.
Images from the scene showed heavy flames spreading through large piles of scrap metal while dark smoke rose high into the sky.
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services shared photos of the blaze on social media as crews continued firefighting operations.
The smoke could also be seen from Toronto Pearson International Airport, though officials said airport operations have not been affected.
Police confirmed that no injuries have been reported so far and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
“We’ve seen some heavy congestion, and as well we’re working with our GTAA partners to ensure they’re aware of the smoke visibility for any approaching aircraft as well,” Peel police media relations officer Tyler Bell told CP24.
Bell also warned residents and drivers to avoid the area, saying: “We don’t know what’s burning. We don’t know how toxic that smoke is.”
