US holds significant talks on expanding nuclear weapons deployments across Europe
This substantial transition would allow more countries to host US dual-capable aircraft able to deliver strategic nuclear strikes
The US is reportedly in active discussions regarding the potential expansion of nuclear weapons deployments to additional European NATO member states, according to the Financial Times reporting on Tuesday.
US officials have signaled openness to positioning assets beyond the existing six countries hosting nuclear-capable bombers according to three people briefed on the ongoing discussions.
This significant move would allow more countries to host US dual-capable of delivering nuclear strikes, though sources underlined that an agreement to expand hosting is not imminent.
The report further clarified that countries on NATO’s eastern flank, including Poland and some Baltic states, were considering hosting DCA bases as the discussions continued through NATO channels.
Notably, the White House Department of Defense and NATO did not respond to requests.
Earlier, Pentagon Policy chief Elbridge Colby announced that the US is preparing to actively employ nuclear weapons to protect NATO members even if European allies take command of conventional forces as reported by the Reuters.
Furthermore, US President Donald Trump and many of his advisors have strongly criticized European allies for not spending enough on defense and relying too heavily on the US military.
