Apple smart glasses delayed to late 2027: Report
According to Gurman, Tim Cook considers the glasses the company’s first priority
Apple's much-anticipated smart glasses have been pushed back to late 2027, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who cited unspecified development "bumps" as the cause.
It pushes the release date about a year past its initial early 2027 goal and presents incoming CEO John Ternus, set to take over from Tim Cook in September, with one of Apple’s most strategically important product releases to date.
According to Gurman, Tim Cook considers the glasses the company’s first priority. Those close to the CEO describe him as very supportive of the initiative.
Ternus is believed to have been spearheading the effort for two years already since he is leading the product development team of the company.
The smart glasses are considered the logical next step towards the further development of the hardware by Apple as a product category with great prospects for becoming an AI accessory for wearables, then a medical monitor and, finally, an augmented reality device for enhancing interaction with the environment.
What to expect from Apple smart glasses?
According to Bloomberg, the glasses are expected to include a camera for photo and video shooting, microphones and speakers for calls, notification listening and music playing.
A multimodal AI assistant powered by Siri is claimed to be under consideration, which will be able to answer requests using the frames. Regarding design considerations, according to sources, Apple is considering no fewer than four types of frames ranging from a large rectangle similar to Ray-Ban Wayfarers, to a smaller version of a rectangle as well as two oval or circular designs of different dimensions with oval camera shapes, colour schemes, and a clear intent to differentiate itself from other competitors.
Data provided by Counterpoint Research and presented back in March indicates that there was a massive 139% growth year-on-year in smart glasses in the second half of 2025, with Meta's Ray-Ban partnership being the driving force. This suggests that Apple is going into an emerging but already quite established market segment.
