Liverpool sack Arne Slot despite Premier League title as club opts for ‘new direction’
The decision was taken by FSG’s CEO Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes
In a surprising move, Liverpool has sacked head coach Arne Slot after two seasons in charge.
The decision comes despite Slot’s impressive efforts helping Liverpool to win its 20th League title in his first season. However, in second year, he faced setbacks in the Premier League.
The decision was taken by FSG’s CEO Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes.
Liverpool issued a statement regarding the decision to sack head coach, “"That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and - most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves - successful.”
“At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward. Again, it must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but.”
Revealing the reason behind this major move, the statement reads, “Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him.”
Who will replace Arne Slot as head coach?
Arne Slot joined Liverpool in 2024 by replacing Jurgen Klopp. Now after Slot, Andoni Iraola is the top contender to replace him.
Contributions of Slot in Liverpool
Besides delivering the league title, he was named LMA Manager of the Year for the 2025 season. Slot also guided the club to help qualify for Champion League qualification in both of his seasons.
Under his supervision, the club reached the Carabao Cup final in the first season and in the second season they entered the Champion League quarter finals.
Paying tribute to his achievements, the club said, “As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.”
“He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.”
