Spotify's disco ball logo sparked viral brand parody trend
Instead of trying to defend classic logo designs, several renowned brands started posting their own fake, glitzy logo redesigns
Spotify launched its 20th anniversary thing by trading its usual green circle for a shiny disco ball. The Swedish streaming giant called the whole initiative “Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s),” and they framed the short term logo remix as this festive throwback to disco culture.
Then, at first it was an instant, very polarised backlash on social media, and after that, for some reason something else happened: a viral trend that even the people who complained most had to laugh about.
On social platforms like X, frustrated users aired their grievances. "The new Spotify app icon looks like it's constantly updating, I can't anymore," one user posted. Another wrote, "The new logo is not giving the lit vibes at all." A third complained the disco ball made it "look like there's a problem with my screen."
In a post on Sunday, Spotify, announcing the replacement of its news logo, replied to a post by Pop Crave: “Alright, we know glitter is not for everyone. Our temp glow up ends soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week.”
Instead of trying to defend classic logo designs, several renowned brands started posting their own fake, glitzy logo redesigns. The social media manager at KitKat put up an image of the redesigned KitKat with the following comment: "KIT KAT's Social Media Manager has updated their app icon to celebrate 135 days of making a post every single day without taking a break."
Some parodies were genuinely well-executed. Others leant so far into absurdity that the joke became the centrepiece.
