Toronto school board eliminates hundreds of staff positions to reduce costs
TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird said the changes are intended to 'modernize and right-size' staffing levels
Toronto District School Board says it is eliminating more than 200 administrative positions as part of efforts to reduce costs and respond to declining student enrolment.
In a statement provided to CP24, the board confirmed that 218 central administration jobs and 91 vacant positions will be cut.
TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird said the changes are intended to “modernize and right-size” staffing levels.
“After years of declining enrolment, the TDSB is taking steps to modernize and right-size the number of central administration staff to ensure resources are focused where they matter most -- in schools and classrooms,” Bird said.
“These changes do not impact classroom staff”, he added.
The announcement follows earlier confirmation that nearly 300 teaching positions could also be cut for the 2026-27 school year, although the board said those numbers may still change.
The TDSB is currently one of eight Ontario school boards operating under provincial supervision after the suspension of elected trustees.
The Ontario government has said new legislation, known as the Putting Student Achievement First Act, is aimed at addressing alleged financial mismanagement within school boards across the province.
