Bill Bailey lauds King Charles's other 'side' after MBE award
Bill Bailey was awarded an MBE for his services in entertainment world
Bill Bailey, the renowned English comedian and musician, sang praises of King Charles as he received an MBE for his services.
At Windsor Castle on Tuesday, May 5, Princess Anne honoured Bailey with an MBE for his contribution to the entertainment world.
While receiving his award, Bailey lauded His Majesty’s “wit" and "comedy,” referring to his subtle jabs at the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, during his Congress address.
For those unaware, King Charles was on a four-day state visit to the United States, where he delivered a 30-minute speech at Congress, becoming the second royal to do so, as his late mother Queen Elizabeth II spoke to Congress in 1991.
During his speech, Charles took a jab at Trump’s public dismissal of the international organization and jokingly reminded him that the United States would be speaking French without Britain in response to Trump’s statement that Britain would be speaking German without the United States.
Articulating his thoughts about the British monarch’s “beautifully measured” and “witty” response, Bailey said after the event, "We talked about comedy, talked about the importance of humour, and saying how well the King did in his speech in America to Congress.”
"It was witty, it was beautifully measured. And it sort of shows that, actually, comedy has a way of getting under the radar a little bit. It has got a mercurial quality to it."
"I think [King Charles] is underestimated as a speaker. I think he’s always been a great speaker, but I think [the State Visit] really showed off that side of it,” Bailey noted.
It is pertinent to mention that King Charles’s high-stakes visit to the United States started on April 27 and concluded on April 30.
