Queen Elizabeth II brushed off sleep for ‘special’ event
Queen Elizabeth II was deeply emotional about her horses and was a passionate horsewoman
Queen Elizabeth II took great deal of care for her horses
Her majesty, who passed away in 2022, was a very passionate horse woman.
Her longtime groom at the Royal Mews, Terry Pendry, tells author Gyles Brandreth that the late monarch used to get up in the middle of the night to watch the birth of horses.
In book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait, Brandreth wrote that Pendry was the one “who brought home to me Elizabeth’s total devotion to her horses.”
The groom said: “Even here, when she was at Windsor, Paul Whybrew, the page, or whoever, would wake her up in the middle of the night, and she had a video link to Sandringham where all the racehorses are bred.”
He continued: “And if a mare was in foal, when they were about to give birth the phone would ring and she would love to see the foal born.”
