Discord delays controversial age verification rollout worldwide: What users should know
Under this policy, the 200 million users would be required to follow current laws regarding age verification
Discord, the popular platform for online gamers’ communication, has announced plans to halt its controversial age verification policy globally following the users’ criticism and their concerns about their data privacy.
According to Discord’s Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy, the company has decided to postpone global rollout until the second half of 2026, while acknowledging that the company “missed the mark.”
He wrote in a blog post on Tuesday, “Many of you are worried that this is just another big tech company finding new ways to collect your personal data. That we’re creating a problem to justify invasive solutions.”
“I get that skepticism. It’s earned, not just toward us, but toward the entire tech industry. But that’s not what we’re doing,” he explained.
Under this policy, the 200 million users would be required to follow current laws regarding age verification. However, they are hitting the pause button on their plan to expand these checks worldwide and update the original February policy before rolling it out.
Earlier this month, the company announced the global age verification policy, requiring the users to undergo a face scanning process and submit IDs for proper age determination.
The move drew backlash from users as some cited privacy concerns linked to a recent security breach of a third party provider in which 70,000 ID photos of users were exposed.
Speaking about users’ concerns, Vishnevskiy said, “Every vendor we work with goes through a security and privacy review before integration. That includes contractual limits on data use, and strict retention and deletion requirements.”
Discord also promised to publish the full details of the policy, explaining how its verification system would work for users in order to ensure transparency in communication and process.
