Colombian President urges UN meeting after US’ strikes on Venezuela

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for an immediate UN security council meeting after the US’ “large-scale attack” on Venezuela in which President Nicolas Maduro was “captured and flown out of the country.”

Taking to X, Petro posted, “The Colombian embassy in Venezuela is active and responding to calls for assistance from Colombians in Venezuela. As members of the United Nations security council, we seek to convene the council.”

Following the US strikes on Venezuela, Colombia has also deployed the forces along the Venezuelan border. Moreover, the preparations are also underway to manage the possible influx of refugees in the wake of multiple explosions that hit Caracas, Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira as per the government statement.

Colombia and Venezuela share more than 2,000 km of land border.

Recently, the US President Donald Trump has announced via a Truth Social post shared on X that Maduro and the First Lady Cilia Flores have been captured and taken out of Venezuela following the large-scale military operation.

Venezuela’s Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said that the government is unaware of the whereabouts of Maduro and the First Lady, thereby demanding immediate proof of their lives.

Vladimir Padrino López, the defence minister, slammed the US for carrying out a “deplorable and criminal regime change operation.”

“This invasion represents the greatest outrage the country has ever suffered,” Gen Padrino López declared.
