Zohran Mamdani sworn in as mayor: A historic leftist shift in NYC politics
The 34-year-old Democrat was sworn in at a deserted subway stop under City Hall
Zohran Mamdani, the leftist Trump opponent, has taken an oath in a historic ceremony as New York City’s first Muslim and the youngest mayor in generations.
The 34-year-old Democrat was sworn in at a deserted subway stop under City Hall after midnight to take the charge of the United States’ largest city.
Being the New York’ first Muslim mayor, Mamdani took oath on Holy Quran, pledging to serve the NYC people based on the commitments he promised during the campaigns.
Mamdani said, “Happy New Year to New Yorkers, both inside this tunnel and above. This is truly an honor and a privilege of a lifetime.”
He also called the ornate subway station “a testament to the importance of public transit to the vitality, the health, and the legacy of our city.”
He will also take oath one more time in a more splendid way publicly at City Hall at 1pm. The oath-taking ceremony will be led by the US Senator Bernie Sanders.
After the ceremony, there will be a large public block party on Broadway, taking place in the “Canyon of Heroes”, a famous street for big parades.
Bold promises made by Mamdani
He spearheaded the campaign based on the agenda of “affordability”, bringing relief from the city’s high cost of living and curbing skyrocketing rents.
Mamdani also showed commitment for expanding free child care and creating a free bus system and a pilot of city-run grocery stores.
He also raised concerns regarding business leaders and their policies that could be responsible for crippling the economy and surging the troubling ratio in crime.
Andrea Hagelgans, a former senior adviser to Mayor Bill de Blasio said, “You are given about a week to deliver. We have no patience as New Yorkers.”
Now, it remains to see whether Mamdani will deliver on his promises and bring a historic leftist shift in NYC politics.
Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda. And he moved to New York City along with his family at the age of 7.
