Ryan Reynolds revives Clint Eastwood classic for Amazon MGM
Ryan Reynolds and Amazon MGM revive 1974 classic 'Thunderbolt & Lightfoot' with new twist
Ryan Reynolds is set to breathe new life into a Hollywood classic.
The actor and producer has joined forces with Amazon MGM to develop a remake of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, the 1974 action comedy originally starring Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges.
Reynolds is expected to star in the project and will produce through his company, Maximum Effort.
The Deadpool & Wolverine star is co-writing the adaptation with Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, the writing duo behind season four of Fargo. Shane Reid, who edited Deadpool & Wolverine, is making his directorial debut with the film.
The original Thunderbolt & Lightfoot followed Eastwood as a bank robber disguised as a preacher on the run from his old crew, who mistakenly think he betrayed them.
Along the way, he meets Lightfoot, a charming thief played by Bridges, and the two team up for another daring heist — with chaotic results.
The film was written and directed by Michael Cimino, who later won an Oscar for The Deer Hunter, and earned Bridges an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Insiders say the remake could serve as a perfect vehicle for a star-powered duo, sparking speculation about a possible reunion between Reynolds and his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman.
Mileti and Wilson’s past credits include Snowfall and The Kingdom. Meanwhile, Reynolds recently signed on to play the villain in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Eloise and continues to produce John Candy: I Like Me, a documentary about the beloved comedian now streaming on Amazon.
