Jonathan Bennett has a vision for a Mean Girls sequel involving the original cast returning as parents to a new generation of Plastics.
In a preview of his upcoming I’ve Never Said This Before podcast appearance obtained by Entertainment Weekly, the 44-year-actor shared his idea for the long-awaited sequel, saying he’d love to reprise his role as Aaron Samuels.
“Why don’t we just do the movie everyone wants?” he said. “I’m a teacher at the school, the girls are grown up and have their own kids, and now their daughters are coming to school.”
The Hallmark star added that the film could appeal to both longtime fans and a younger audience.
“You could have a storyline for all the parents who are the millennials that grew up with it — and then you have the kids for their generation,” he explained, describing it as the perfect “multi-generational viewing experience.”
Though the sequel hasn’t been officially discussed, Bennett said the cast is more than ready.
“In the group chat, do we want to do it? Yes,” he admitted. “We would love to come back and bring the band back together. It’s just way above my pay grade. That’s a Tina Fey question.”
As for Aaron’s story, Bennett shared that he imagines the former high school heartthrob would have become a teacher.
“I think Aaron would be straight,” he added, clarifying that he wouldn’t want to alter the character’s story just because he, as an actor, came out as gay.
