Colin Farrell is keeping expectations grounded when it comes to the future of The Penguin.

The actor, who transformed into Oswald “Oz” Cobb for the HBO and DC Studios series, a spinoff of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, recently opened up about the chances of a second season.

Although the show was originally planned as a limited series, its strong reception has fueled speculation about more episodes.

Speaking with ComicBook, Farrell admitted he’s not overly optimistic about a renewal, though he’s not ruling it out entirely.

“Oh, I don’t know. I have a bit of a, generally speaking, I have a bit of a negativity bias,” he said with a laugh.

“Apparently, I’ve been told by various people close to me. So I would say I would bet against, but not by much.”

Still, the actor acknowledged that discussions are happening behind the scenes. He revealed that “the powers that be” have been exploring potential “storylines that could justify” a continuation of the series.

Farrell also teased how The Penguin connects directly to The Batman Part II, saying, “It conveniently worked that the death at the end of The Batman and the devastation within Gotham opened up a power vacuum that then Oz could try and capitalize on.”

He continued, “That was perfect for the parallel eight hours that we had. And then [The Batman Part II] will pick up, whatever, a few weeks after the show ended. But I kind of bet against, but not by a wide mark.”

The Batman Part II is expected to begin filming in the spring, with a scheduled release date of October 1, 2027.

Director Matt Reeves, who created the gritty Gotham universe, previously shared that he “would love to do more things” in it, including a possible second season of The Penguin

However, he emphasized that his current focus is fully on The Batman Part II and that discussions about The Penguin’s continuation would happen once the film is underway.

For now, fans can look forward to seeing Farrell’s crime boss story seamlessly lead into the next chapter of Reeves’ Gotham saga.
