Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al- Sheikh passed away on Tuesday, September 23.
Saudi Arabia has announced the passing of its Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al- Sheikh, the Kingdom’s top religious authority and Head of the Council of Senior Scholars.
The Royal Diwan confirmed the news on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 through the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). He passed away at the age of 82.
“With his passing, the Kingdom and the Islamic world have lost a great scholar who devoted his life to serving Islam and Muslims,” the statement read.
Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al- Sheikh, who also served as the General President of Scholarly Research and Ifta Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Muslims World League, became Grand Mufti in 1999 following the death of Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Baz.
The funeral prayer will be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh after the Asr prayer (3:12 pm local Saudi time). King Salman bin Abdulaziz also directed that an absentee funeral prayer be performed in the Grand Mosque in Makkah, the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) Mosque in Madinah, and in all mosques across the Kingdom.
King Salam and Crown Price of Saudia Arabia Mohammed bin Salman extended their condolences to the late scholar’s family, the Saudi people, and Muslims worldwide. Leaders across the region have also begun sending messages of sympathy.
People around the world are sharing their condolences on X (formerly Twitter) after the passing of Saudi Arabia Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Al- Sheikh.
Naseer al qtami tweeted saying, “We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return His Eminence the Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh, passed away a short while ago. May God forgive him, have mercy on him, and grant the nation all good things. May He reward him on our behalf and on behalf of all Muslims with the best reward. Praise be to God in all circumstances.”
Yasin Al-Waaili tweeted, “Today a great scholar of Islam passed away, Our Sheikh Abdulaziz Aal-Ashaykh The Mufti of Saudi Arabia A great scholar who had the honour of doing the Hajj Khutbah at Arafah for well over 30 years in a row This is a clip from the year 1404 (1983) May Allah have mercy on him.”
