Telecom Argentina unveils major 5G data center expansion plan

Telecom Argentina is massively accelerating its infrastructure plans and is substantially working to expand its 5G network and data hubs to meet the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and corporate clients.

The company stated that it aims to establish 750 operational 5G sites nationwide by the end of 2025.

This will be an enormous rise as compared to the existing number of 550.

One of the major components of this plan is the launch of private 5G networks via network slicing technology which is made possible by its new 5G core in Buenos Aires.

The carrier has already implemented about 25 sector networks like mining, oil, ports, and agriculture.

The telecom is also in the process of a massive upgrade of its 16 data centres spread across the country in addition to its connectivity drive.

It aims to increase the size of each facility to 10MW, turning them into Edge computing nodes with the ability to cope with advanced AI workloads and inference applications.

Julio Hukta, B2B business director of Telecom has indicated that the firm will expand its computing capacity by a fivefold in the years to come to facilitate this endeavour.

The Pacheco flagship data centre in proximity to Buenos Aires is already highly occupied and additional expansion is in place awaiting customer bids.

The high rate of growth (6.9% per annum) in its enterprise unit has fuelled this aggressive capital expenditure, which increased 53.7% per annum to reach $355 million.
