Nancy Guthrie disappearance sparks urgent scam warning from officials
The Pima County department cautioned the people that it will never ask for money related to this investigation
The Pima County Sheriff's Department in Arizona is notifying people of a new scam connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.
On social platform X, the sheriff’s department released a statement about the scam: “The Pima County Sheriff's Department is aware of posts circulating about the Guthrie investigation that include a QR code requesting money," the statement read, adding the department "will never ask for money related to this case, or any investigation.”
“Please do not send money to people you do not know or scan QR codes requesting payment. If you see one of these posts, ignore it and report it. Stay alert and help spread the word.”
The scam warning comes as Guthrie’s disappearance extends past the five-month mark. The 84-year-old was last seen entering her Arizona home on January 31. Authorities later discovered dried blood droplets outdoors on the property that matched the elderly woman’s DNA.
Earlier, a critical ransom noted received shortly after the February 2026 disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, claimed that she had died. The note was one of two planned for Nancy Guthrie's family and sent to news media in the days following her kidnapping.
It is crucial to note that a 42-year-old Derrick Callella, accepted a plea deal for two felonies for sending a ransom demand across state lines and using a telecommunication device to make threats. He must serve five years of probation and is slated for sentencing on September 10.
Savannah Guthrie has been one of the few consistent voices, campaigning for ongoing coverage of the case, to ensure that her mother’s name does not fade from the news cycle. At present, pressure and possibility are both alive.
Nonetheless, there is a significant reward in the case, while authorities have officially ruled out only Guthrie’s kids and their spouses as prime suspects in the missing person’s case which they believe as an abduction.
