OpenAI has officially announced the opening of its first office in India, just days after introducing the cheapest subscription plan. The recent move marks a significant development to incorporate in the country’s rapidly growing AI market.
The company has announced that a local team will be set up in India, and a corporate office in New Delhi, in the coming months.
Primarily, India has the significant market for smartphones after China. OpenAI is already in competition with tech giants like Google and Meta, it seems all are eyeing into the country’s massive user base.
The CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman said in a statement, “Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India.”
Conversely, OpenAI has also faced challenges in doing business with India.
Indian news agency Asian News International (ANI) invoked OpenAI last year for allegedly using its copyright content without seeking permission.
Though the Indian government is actively promoting AI across its departments to build the country’s position on the global AI map.
Altman said, “India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader-amazing talent, a world class developer ecosystem and strong government support through the India AI mission.”
OpenAI is expecting to get feedback from Indian users to make its products relevant for the community audience and even design features and tools particularly for the country.
