Ryne Sandberg, Hall of Famer athlete, has passed away at the age of 65 after a year-long cancer battle.

The former Baseball player, who took his last breath on Monday, July 28, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2024.

The Washington-born second baseman played for the Chicago Cubs in 15 out of 16 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons. The acclaimed sportsman earned All-Star nods in 10 consecutive seasons from 1984-93.

Sandberg, nickname “Ryno”, achieved several other accolades throughout his career, including:

  • Nine consecutive Gold Gloves
  • Seven Silver Sluggers
  • Won the National League MVP in 1984

The former professional Baseball player, coach and manager, first announced his retirement in 1994, however, he returned to the field two years later in 1996 and played two seasons before finally calling it quits at the end of 1997 season.

Tributes are pouring in as the Baseball world mourns the legend.

The MLB commissioner Rob Manfred remembered the late athlete in affectionate words, saying, “Ryne Sandberg was a legend of the Chicago Cubs franchise and a beloved figure throughout Major League Baseball.”

“The five-tool player excelled in every facet of the game thanks to his power, speed and work ethic,” he added while recounting the achievements of the sports icon.

Manfred continued, “After retirement, Ryne remained active as an ambassador, manager and a frequent participant at the Hall of Fame.”

He also extended his condolences to the friends, family and fans of the deceased player.

His team Chicago Cubs also took to X to write, “With great sadness, we share that Ryne Sandberg has passed away.”

Other MLB clubs also paid heartfelt tributes as the Red Sox wrote, “Keeping the Sandberg family in our thoughts and sending love to the Cubs community. His legacy means so much to baseball.”

Milwaukee Brewers wrote, “Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ryne Sandberg.”

The nine-time Golden Gloves winner was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2005.
