Baazigar’s writer, Robin Bhatt, recently took a trip down the memory lane and revealed that the film was first offered to Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan.
Shah Rukh Khan, 59, also known as Baadshah of Bollywood, decided to take on the role after both Salman and Akshay turned it down.
During an exclusive interview with Friday Talkies, Bhatt shared that while they were struggling to find a lead actor for the 1993 film, he met the Don star at Hotel Villa.
Robin recalled, “I finished writing, but we didn’t know who to cast. We went to Akshay, he refused. Then we approached Salman Khan, and he said ‘Why would Salman do this film?’ He too refused it.”
The writer continued, “I remember we often stayed in this hotel called Villa. He would come there for Raju Bangaya Gentleman sittings. I would be there to work on my subjects. Sometimes he used to meet me. During these meetings, I had understood that he is different and thinks differently. So one day, I narrated the story to him and just when we arrived at the interval, Shah Rukh happily agreed to do the film. He didn’t even care to hear the second half.”
The Pathaan actor accepted the role with a firm condition – after hearing only half the script.
Speaking exclusively, Bhatt recalled his conversation with the Jawan actor, who said, “I will do the film if only you will leave the script as it is. You will not try and justify the character or make him grey.”
Later in the interview, Robin also shared that the thriller-crime film is an adaptation of the 1953 novel A Kiss Before Dying.
For the unversed, the film starred Shilpa Shetty, Kajol, Raakhee, and Johnny Lever in lead roles.
