Karan Johar is getting candid about Shah Rukh Khan’s character in his debut film as he recalls being reprimanded by veteran actress Shabana Azmi after she watched the film for the first time.
During an exclusive interview with Lilly Singh, Karan, who entered the industry with his debut film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, opened up about the King actor’s ‘hypocrisy’ in the cult classic.
While the director didn’t hold back from questioning himself over gender politics and ‘cringe’ dialogues in the romantic drama, he highlighted why Shah Rukh’s character failed to impress the audience worldwide.
The filmmaker and fashion icon said that, as they noted, “Rahul was a questionable flag. There was a kind of latent hypocrisy,” which had a profound impact on the people on the other side of the screen.
KJo further went on to add as he talked about taking the director’s seat for the very first time, "Was he just chasing surface-level good looks? That was all my writing. I didn't realize at the time that I was feeding a certain school of thought. I just wanted to make a blockbuster.”
In addition, the Koffee With Karan host also recalled apologizing to Shabana for writing Shah Rukh’s controversial character after she questioned Rahul's behaviour towards Kajol’s Anjali in the 1998 classic.
