Comedian Dave Chappelle has found himself at the center of controversy once again and this time he has faced criticism from fellow comedian Michelle Buteau.
During a public interview, Buteau, known for her candid humor and advocacy for human rights, condemned Chappelle's remarks, calling them harmful and outdated.
The backlash stems from the 51-year-old's ongoing use of transphobic humor, which has sparked debate ever since his 2021 Netflix special The Closer.
During the show, Elaine Chappelle's husband made controversial statements about the transgender community, which were met with protests from LGBTQ+ advocates and sparked calls for the comedian to be held accountable for his words.
However, Buteau described Chappelle’s jokes as “disrespectful” and “hurtful,” while conversing in an interview.
She emphasized that, while comedy often involves pushing boundaries, making jokes at the expense of marginalized groups is not the type of comedy that fosters growth or understanding.
“I don’t think there’s any humor in punching down,” Buteau said. “You can’t just say whatever you want and hide behind the argument that it’s ‘just comedy.’ Words have consequences.”
On the work front, Dave Chappelle marked his career debut through comedy sketch series Chappelle's Show.
