'Nosferatu' actor, director's ideas clash on depiction of 'Count Orlok'
Bill Skarsgård worked with an opera coach to deepen his voice for 'Count Orlok'
Nosferatu actor Bill Skarsgård and director Robert Eggers were clearly not on the same page when it came to the portrayal of vampire, 'Count Orlok' in the film.
Eggers had a completely different approach about the personality of 'Orlok' in the horror film.
Just because he was really tired of 'heroic' and sad vampires, his idea was to depict a villain as demonic as it could be.
But the It star had a completely opposite perspective. Where Robert wanted an out and out evil, Bill wanted 'Orlok' to have some kind of 'vulnerability' in him.
The director, in a statement, told SFX magazine, “Because I’m so tired of the heroic and sad vampires, I was just like, ‘He’s a demon. He’s so evil.”
“But Bill was like, ‘Yeah but there needs to be sometimes where he has some kind of vulnerability.”
“It’s very subtle, and it’s not there often, but it is enough”, he added.
The 34-year-old actor worked really hard on the character. He wanted it look as real as possible.
Bill even worked specifically on his voice. He was focused on deepening the voice as much as possible.
While talking about the voice of Count Orlok, The Lighthouse director said: “That’s Bill, not effects.”
The Swedish actor worked with an Opera coach to deepen his voice for Nosferatu.
