TikTok tests new YouTube-like feature for uploading longer videos
The 60 minute video-sharing feature is only available in some regions
TikTok is testing out a new feature that lets users upload 60-minute videos on the video-sharing application, Business Insider reported.
It is, however, unknown when and if additional people will be able to obtain the update, as well as which locations are currently receiving it.
As per reports, TikTok does not intend on launching the feature widely, and it is currently available in only some markets.
However, this new move can create problems for YouTube, as audiences looking for shorter video alternatives can now switch to TikTok.
At the time of the app's launch, TikTok had a 15-minute upload limit, but this has steadily increased over the past few years. TikTok says that it often hears from creators who want more time for things like cooking demos, beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, comedic sketches, and more. So this is its answer to those requests.
The change was first noted by Tech Weekly writer Matt Navarra, TikTok later confirmed it.
According to the Pew Research Centre last year, 80% of US adults have at least once used YouTube, while only 33% of adults have used TikTok. YouTube currently has more users than TikTok in the United States.
However, in terms of minutes watched, the app is far ahead of YouTube.
The longer video feature may also threaten streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.
