Imtiaz Ali opened up about Amar Singh Chamkila and his double-meaning songs, saying he was not always objectifying women.
In conversation with Mid-Day, the critically acclaimed filmmaker said, "He might be saying things that were not acceptable to society, but he was not a s**ist kind of a person."
He shared that the late Punjabi singer was "quite liberal in his way." Imtiaz continued, "You must have noticed that even during the performances, it was the woman who was teasing the man first. His and Amarjot’s songs were more of play-acting."
Speaking of the double-meaning songs of Chamkila, the Jab We Met director shared that viewers can 'judge' him on that. However, in Punjab and all across India, sangeet songs have been vulgar for hundreds of years.
He added, "Women are naughtier than men, and their naughtiness comes through music and song which they enjoy."
For the unversed, Imtiaz recently directed the film titled Amar Singh Chamkila, a biopic based on the tragic murder of the renowned Punjabi singer and his wife.
The movie featured Diljit Dosanjh as the late singer, whereas Parineeti Chopra portrayed the role of his wife, Amarjot.
The film, which is streaming on Netflix, has been receiving praise and appreciation from people all around the world.
