Guinness World Record: Massive blueberry confirmed as worlds heaviest

A massive blueberry weighing 20.4g, grown in Australia has been recognised as the world's heaviest by the Guinness World Records, NBC reported. 

The blueberry was picked on November 13 and has only now been confirmed as a Guinness World Record. It measures 39.31 millimetres and is almost the size of a tennis ball.

It took Costa group horticulturalists 12 months to grow this massive sized blueberry which weighs 70 times more than the average size. It was grown in Corindi, New South Wales.

Gardeners directly involved include, Brad Hocking, Jessica Scalzo and Marie-France Courtois.

At the time of the harvest, Hocking had noticed that the fruit size was "growing really well."

The blueberry which belongs to the variety of "Eterna", developed under Costa’s variety improvement programme. In this programme only one to two blueberry varieties are grown per year.

According to Brad, "Eterna as a variety has a really great flavour and consistently large fruit. When we picked this one, there were probably around 20 other berries of a similar size,"

"This really is a delightful piece of fruit. While the fruit is large, there's absolutely no compromise on quality or flavour as would be expected when developing a premium variety blueberry."

Besides being exceptionally big in size, Eterna blueberries are also known for their long shelf life and crisp texture.

The previous record holder blueberry weighed 16.2g with a diameter of 36.33mm.

Besides blueberry, other fruits that hold a record include strawberry weighing 289 grams and a monster grapefruit which broke the record to become worlds heaviest and largest grapefruit.
