American Airlines jet with 53 passengers on board careens off NY airport runway

American Airlines Embraer E145, slid off from the taxiway after landing on an icy runway of New York’s Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, the Newyork Post reported.

The plane carrying 53 passengers on board including 50 passengers and 3 crew members after making its journey from Philadelphia touched down at 4 pm, an hour later than its reported landing time.

The management of the airline told reporters that "the aircraft exited the taxiway while in transit to the terminal due to snowy airfield conditions" and veered into the grass.

Thankfully, none of the three crew members and fifty passengers suffered any injuries.

According to an American official, the frightening occurrence was spurred on by "snowy airfield conditions" brought on by light snowstorms around the area.

It was lightly snowing in Rochester at the time of the slip.

The area is expecting another round of heavy snowfall, with a major pummelling of 2 to 4 inches per hour predicted for nearby Buffalo over the weekend.

A series of severe winter storms have wreaked havoc across many US states, killing dozens of people, destroying properties, and leaving thousands without power. 

The weather service has issued more alerts for snow and ice in the coming days, as the country faces one of the worst cold spells of the season.

The death toll from the storms has risen to at least 43 in nine states, Hindustan Times reported.
