Manchester City staged an incredible comeback, triumphing 3-1 against Everton upon their return from the Club World Cup. The win narrowed the gap between City and Premier League leaders Liverpool to five points.
Pep Guardiola's squad, aiming for an unprecedented fourth consecutive top-flight title, faced a daunting 1-0 deficit at Goodison Park after Jack Harrison, a former City player, struck the net in the first half.
However, a rejuvenated City squad turned the tables when Phil Foden unleashed a powerful shot past Jordan Pickford, equalising the score at 1-1 in the 53rd minute. The momentum shifted further as Julian Alvarez secured the lead for City from the penalty spot.
The champions' second-half brilliance climaxed with Bernardo Silva capitalising on a Pickford error, sealing the victory with a well-placed shot in the dying minutes of the match.
Despite recent struggles in the league, City showcased their acumen, having clinched five trophies in 2023, including the Club World Cup. However, their return to the Premier League was met with challenges, facing a determined Everton side.
City dominated possession early on but failed to convert it into goals. Everton, on the other hand, leveraged a defensive lapse, with Harrison capitalising on a Dwight McNeil cross to take the lead.
The resilient Everton nearly doubled their lead through Harrison, thwarted only by a remarkable save from City's goalkeeper, Ederson. Nevertheless, City emerged reinvigorated after halftime, earning their well-deserved victory with a flurry of goals.
Elsewhere in the league, Chelsea's Noni Madueke secured a late win against Crystal Palace from the penalty spot, offering a morale boost at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, Wolves dominated Brentford with a 4-1 victory, powered by Hwang Hee-chan's brace, solidifying their recent impressive form.
City's win catapults them into fourth place, while Everton, enduring a second consecutive defeat, find themselves precariously positioned just above the relegation zone following a recent points deduction.
