PESHAWAR: Armed robbers looted over 200 tolas of gold ornaments from a shop on the Hospital Road here Saturday.
Later, the jewellers took to the streets to protest the incident and blocked the Grand Trunk Road.
Locals said three armed men stormed the jewellery shop on the Hospital Road and took away gold ornaments worth millions of rupees.
As the case had not been lodged with the police till the filing of this report, some said the robbers looted 200 tolas of gold while another report said the gold was around 10 kilograms.
“They have yet to tell us the exact quantity of the looted gold,” an official of the Khan Raziq Police Station said.
The jewellers later blocked the GT Road and chanted slogans against the police for failing to check the rising number of robberies that are taking place in the area.
Some of the protesters were injured when tried to jump the barbed wire to reach the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
The protesters dispersed when the police assured them that the robbers would soon be arrested.
The traders alleged that the incidents of dacoities and extortion were rising in city, but the government was not taking steps to check the crimes.
They said the recent incidents of daylight dacoities in the busy markets and the nearby localities had led to a sense of insecurity among the traders and dwellers of the city.
“It will cause a fresh flight of capital from the province if the government failed to control crimes such as dacoities, extortions and kidnapping for ransom,” a protester said.
