Andy Burnham sends strong message on UK’s net zero target
The UK is fully committed to reaching net zero by 2050
Andy Burnham has reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 saying it is no longer feasible for Britons to believe they are not already affected by a changing climate.
Detailing new plans for mass community renewable energy, Andy Burnham said the UK must believe in itself and expressed his commitment to reaching net zero targets that have been rejected by the Conservatives and Reform UK.
In this connection, Burnham said: “I am determined that we meet the commitment on which Labour was elected and reach net zero by 2050,”
“The climate crisis is not a distant threat. It is here and with us now. The British people are no longer insulated from the consequences, and they do not want to be excluded from the solutions. They are looking for ways to do their bit. Community energy gives them that chance.”
He wanted to connect localized energy democratization to green power projects in order to reach net zero targets and make energy more affordable. According to Burnham, he is cognizant of the profound risks posed by global climate change to many Britons.
The issue is crucial for Burnham who is facing major pressure from both sides over whether to authorize the Jackdaw gasfield and Rosebank oilfield in the North Sea. A number of Labour MPs are concerned that authorising the projects might create an unfavorable impression on climate efforts and could provide a boost to the Greens who argue that Labour is not serious about handling the climate emergency.
Burnham tied net zero plans to decentralization, setting out funding for so-called people’s power projects where communities will have a stake in the project.
